‘Family business’ is family fun! Discovery and adventure is lifelong and there’s so much to do with kids of all ages in Monmouth County.

There are so many things for kids to do in Monmouth County and kid culture is evident in the independence they exhibit such as heading to school en masse on their bikes in Fair Haven or to the beach with surfboards tucked under their arms. Basically, growing up in Monmouth County is a nice gig. And there are lots of things for the entire family to share, as well, both indoors and out, by the shore and inland. Let’s start with the great outdoors, as Monmouth County boasts an array of beautiful parks and beaches that are perfect for families to explore.

Sandy Hook Beach, located in the Gateway National Recreation Area, is a beloved destination for families who enjoy sandy shores and crystal-clear waters.

With miles of pristine coastline, families can swim, sunbathe, and build sandcastles to their heart’s content. The beach also offers picnic areas, playgrounds, and nature trails, making it a fantastic spot for a day of family fun in the sun. If you’re looking for a park that offers a little bit of everything, then Middletown’s Thompson Park is a must-visit. This expansive park in Lincroft is home to a Creative Arts Center, playgrounds, picnic areas and Lake Marlu, perfect for fishing and kayaking. Families can explore the park’s lush trails, spot wildlife, and learn about local flora and fauna at the nature center. The playgrounds offer a variety of play equipment suitable for all ages. For a truly unique experience, head to Allaire State Park in Wall Township. This historic park offers a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved 19th- century ironworks village. Families can take a step back in time and explore the village. Complete with blacksmith shops, a general store, and even a working bakery, it’s an adventure. Kids will love the hands-on demonstrations and interactive exhibits that bring history to life. The park also offers hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and camping options. Taylor-Butler House in Middletown, NJ

The Monmouth County Historical Association Museum in Freehold showcases the rich history of Monmouth County. From its colonial roots to its role in the American Revolution, come see history come to life. Kids can try on colonial clothing, play with traditional toys, and participate in interactive exhibits that bring history to life. The museum also hosts special events and workshops for families throughout the year. Visit some of Monmouth County Historical Association’s other properties including Holmes-Hendrickson House in Holmdel and Middletown’s Taylor- Butler House.

Monmouth County is also home to some fantastic museums that are sure to captivate the imaginations of both kids and adults alike.

The Monmouth Museum in Lincroft offers a variety of interactive exhibits that focus on art, science, and history. From hands-on art workshops to dinosaur exhibits, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The museum also hosts special events and workshops for families. It is a great place to learn, create, and have fun together.

Up the Lazy River

If you’re looking to beat the heat and don’t want to head to the beach, you’re in luck.

Just outside Monmouth County, you will find Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in Jackson Township. This thrilling water park offers endless excitement with its slides, wave pools, lazy river, and kiddie play areas. Families can splash, slide, and swim to their heart’s content. Boardwalk arcades have always featured pinball but a visit to The Silverball Retro Arcade on the Asbury Park Boardwalk takes it to another level.

Literally a museum of working (and playable!) pinball, classic video and arcade games, its flat fee admission makes it easy and affordable to enjoy with all of the machines available for use.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Sometimes finding indoor adventures can be tough to find, especially when faced with an overly energetic gathering of kids who are eager to play.

If this is your challenge, head to iPlay America, an indoor amusement park in Freehold. An amusement park with a wide range of attractions, including go-karts, bumper cars, laser tag, and a 4D theater, you’ll find plenty of fun here. Indoors, outdoors, summer, winter or fall (spring too) you will find that Monmouth County offers a rich experience for kids no matter what their interest.
